Before turning your gas supply off or on, make sure you turn off all gas appliances and pilot lights first. For example, turn off gas cooking appliances, heaters, and water heaters, including its water tap.
Location of the natural gas meter
Image - Your meter box could be located in your garden or at the side of your house.
Image - the valve tap is horizontal when turned off. The valve is vertical when turned on.
LPG supply
Your LPG cylinder will usually be installed on a concrete slab near the house.
\
Off - turn the round valve at the top of the cylinder clockwise until it won’t turn anymore. If you have more than one cylinder, make sure you turn them both off.
On - turn the valve anti-clockwise.
Lighting appliances and pilot lights
Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before turning an appliance on or lighting pilot lights. The gas fitter who installed it can also help you. Make sure you:
light the match or lighter before turning on the gas
turn off the gas and wait a few minutes if it doesn’t light
check your gas supply is turned on.
If the gas company isolated your supply, they’ll help you restore the gas and relight your appliances. Or they’ll leave instructions if you aren’t home.
Trapped air
Air can get trapped in the gas pipes if supply has been turned off and back on again. The first appliance you light should purge this air but it could take a few moments.
If air is still trapped, the appliance might go out shortly after you light it. Try turning it off, wait a few minutes then light it again. Then let it burn for at least three minutes once it lights. Gas cooktops are the easiest appliances to light first.
Bushfire safety
Turn your gas supply off if a bushfire is threatening your home, whether you are staying at the property or not.
Keep the area around the gas meter or LPG cylinders clear.
LPG gas
Turn the cylinder off and leave it where it has been installed. But make sure cylinders are secured and are standing on a solid base.
Turn the safety relief valve away from the wall of the house and any combustible materials. The safety relief valve is located on the gas valve on the opposite side to the connection or hose. It could be covered by a dust cover.
Move any portable bottles or cylinders away from buildings.
Move any cylinders attached to wooden structures, such a barbecue frame, so they’re on the ground or on a solid base.
Leave LPG cylinders in an upright position, never lie them down.
Do not cover LPG cylinders with wet material – it could dry out, catch fire and heat the cylinder.
After a bushfire
Don’t turn on the gas supply until a licensed gas fitter has confirmed there are no gas leaks or damage.
Do not transport a gas cylinder that has been subjected to fire or severe heat yourself – ask your LPG supplier to collect it.
LPG cylinders should be checked by your LPG supply company.
