If you own a stove made before 2015, it's not considered safe unless it has been modified and retested. Older stoves that aren't listed below, should be disposed of.
The butane gas cannisters used in some portable gas stoves (also known as lunchbox cookers) can overheat and could cause the stove to explode. Reported injuries have ranged from scalding to serious burns.
Modified and retested stoves – meeting the current Australian Standards - will have a new certification number. Check the number on your stove against the list of suspended stoves. You will find the certification number on the data plate.
Ask the retailer if you can’t locate the data plate.

Using your gas stove safely
- Check your stove is Australian safety certified. If it’s not, dispose of it or return it to the supplier.
- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, including how long you can cook with your stove before it needs to be turned off.
- Allow enough air flow around the stove.
- Only use the stove when the trivet is the right way up, with the pot supports facing upwards.
- Make sure all connections are tight and there are no gas leaks.
- Never use your stove indoors or in confined spaces.
- Never use the stove in a way that causes the canister to overheat – for example, don’t heat up heat beads or cook with pots larger than 200mm (unless the manufacturer's instructions advise its safe)
- Don’t use the stove if it doesn't seem to be operating or lighting correctly. Do not tamper with the appliance or its controls.
Disposing of stoves and gas cannisters
You can dispose of both stove units and gas canisters safely through an appropriate community waste or recycling centre.
