To get your car learner's permit (L's) you need to pass a learner's theory test.
You can complete your learner's test online by doing the myLs course.
After you have completed the course and passed the test, and providing you're at least 16 years old, you can apply for your L's.
Steps to getting your L's
- Step 1
Go to a Service SA centre
Go to any Service SA centre. Take with you:
- evidence of your identity - find out what identity documents are accepted
- an email address (not a school email address).
At the Service SA centre you'll:
- have your photo taken
- have a mySAGOV account created
- download the mySAGOV app
- pay a once only $40 fee to enrol in myLs.
- Step 2
Complete and pass the myLs course
You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old to complete the course.
To start:
1. Log in to your mySAGOV account using your web browser (not the mySAGOV app).
Devices tips:
- We recommend completing myLs on a computer rather than a mobile phone for the best experience.
- If you're using Safari, make sure you unblock your pops ups by going to Settings > Safari > Disable Block Pop-ups
2. Select Launch myLs from your account dashboard or the My services menu.
3. Select Start to begin.
You have 12 months from the date you enrol to complete myLs. You can attempt the online myLs test as many times as you need at no additional cost.
Before you start driving, you must apply for your learner's permit.

What happens next
Having your learner's permit means you're allowed to drive a car on the road with a qualified supervising driver or driving instructor but there are conditions.
While learning you must complete at least 75 hours of driving including a minimum of 15 hours at night with a qualified supervising driver or a driving instructor. This must be recorded in a log book.
You must carry your learner's permit card or digital permit when driving and show it to a police officer when asked.
You must hold a learner's permit for:
- at least 12 months if you are under 25 years old
- at least 6 months if you are 25 years old or over.
