Renew your driver's licence with a new photo

You'll need to renew your driver's licence in person and have a new photo taken if:

  • your last photo was taken more than 10 years ago
  • you're trying to renew your licence for longer than your photo is valid.

How to renew

Take your current licence and the renewal form posted to you to a Service SA centre.

Find a Service SA centre

If you don't have the renewal form, you can complete one when you get to Service SA or download the application form (237.2 KB PDF) to take with you.

Other ways to renew

If you can't attend in person due to extenuating circumstances, you can apply for a licence photo extension.

You can renew your licence online if you don't need a new photograph.

Calculate your renewal fee

A licence re-establishment fee of $31 will apply if the licence has expired for more than 6 months.

There is no additional fee to have a photo taken.

What happens next

When you pay, you'll be given a receipt and your temporary licence.

If you use the mySAGOV app, the new expiry date and photo will be displayed on your digital licence immediately.

You should receive your licence card in the post within 3 weeks.

If you don't receive the licence card within 3 weeks phone Service SA on 13 10 84. If you don't contact Service SA within 30 days of renewing your licence, you may need to pay a replacement licence fee.

Reasons you can't renew your licence

Licence renewals may not be available in some circumstances:

  • if your licence has expired by more than 5 years
  • if you are disqualified, suspended or otherwise prevented from holding or obtaining a driver's licence.

Renewing early or late

Licence renewals paid before the expiry date, will commence the day after the existing expiry date.

A driver's licence is valid until midnight of the expiry date - eg if a licence is due to expire on the 26 June, the licence holder can drive up until midnight on the 26 June.

Expired licences up to 5 years can still be renewed. If your licence has expired for more than 6 months, you'll need to pay a licence re-establishment fee of $31.

Renewing with concession

If you're eligible for a licence concession and it hasn't been applied to your renewal notice, visit the registration and licence concessions page for how to apply.

If you have a concession and it has been applied to your renewal notice, your concession will be validated during the renewal process.
