Energy efficiency requirements
Energy efficiency requirements for commercial buildings have been improved and implemented in the national building framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The minimum requirements address:
- the building fabric
- external glazing
- building sealing
- air-conditioning and ventilation
- lighting and power
- access for maintenance.
The primary objective of the requirements is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in all new buildings by efficiently using energy.

The national building framework
The national building framework was developed to provide consistency in how buildings are assessed and rated for energy efficiency.
Measures under the national building framework will be implemented through the Building Code of Australia where they affect new buildings work.
The framework will also be capable of being extended over time to cover broader sustainability issues including the level of greenhouse gas emissions generated and water used by commercial buildings.
