Family law Obligations of the school or preschool Obligations of parents
Family law
Both parents have a say in decision making about long-term issues such as:
- where their child goes to preschool or school
- major health issues.
Unless there is a court order that states otherwise, each parent has equal legal responsibility for their children.

Obligations of the school or preschool
The responsibility of schools and preschools is to provide education and care for all children enrolled. They do not have a role in resolving or taking sides in family disputes and will make decisions that focus on the best interests of children.

Obligations of parents
If there are changes in family circumstances that may impact on your child:
- advise the preschool or school immediately
- provide a copy of current court orders as soon as possible.
Also notify the school or preschool in advance if:
- there is a change in arrangements for collecting your child for an appointment, or at end of day
- you need to change the emergency contacts for your child - emergency contacts should be people you would trust your child with over night.
You can do this on the phone or in writing.
