Births, deaths and marriages

The registration of a birth, death or marriage is a legal requirement in South Australia. However, birth, death and marriage certificates are not issued automatically by the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office.

Apply for a birth, death and marriage certificate

Find out how to arrange a registration of a birth, death or marriage in South Australia by visiting the Office for Consumer and Business Affairs website.

If a person was born, married or died interstate, the applicant needs to apply to the relevant state or territory for a certificate.

Change of name

You can register a change of name in South Australia if you:

  • were born in South Australia; or
  • have been a resident here for more than 3 months.

Only one change of name is allowed in any 12-month period.

Register a change of name and apply for change of name certificate.
